BUY IT!It's awesome. And the music... Oh, the music... Love it.. 1. Super Hydorah is a great game and a very faithful reproduction of Gladius-like visuals, music/sound effects and level design; mind, Super Hydorah is not a carbon copy of the old classic shmups but rather, introduces new features such as unlocking weapons by beating levels, non-linear progression thru stage selection etc. that add immensely to the gameplay and replayability. Kudos to the developer for avoiding the convenient trap of reproducing an exact copy of an old genre staple (e.g. Timespinner), and for opting to innovate instead; The game controls like an old glove -- comfy and responsive;Levels in the game seem a bit short (maybe just the early levels? No way to tell for now) but are all very well-designed: level design of genius!2. Gameplay wise, Super Hydorah is uncompromising and somewhat disagrees with my dulled reflexes after decades of handholding in new-gen games; in fact, the game is very rewarding when I manage to beat a level by controlling, for a sufficiently long time, my inner toddler who throws a tantrum because he's not getting enough tender loving pampering from the game;3. Price hike of 75% two months after the launch made me a bit unhappy; however, judging from the amount of love and care poured into the making of the game, we should buy in order to keep the retro genre from dying, seeing what an endangered species they have nowadays become;4. There's no volume setting under options... I've noticed the same with Cursed Castilla and perhaps this is a designer aesthetics thing: a kinda arcade-y design philosophy? Would still love to have it though.Visuals: 8/10Sound/Music: 6/10Story: -- (cannot comment on the story as I'm still stuck in early stages)Controls: 9/10Level Design: 10/10Gameplay: 9/10OVERALL (rounded up): 8.4/10 -- A MUST-BUY FOR RETRO GAMERS. If you like retro-style games or shoot 'em ups in general, this is a must buy. The free original was great, but 2 player co-op, added levels and other improvements make it well worth the price. The old games we remember -- many of them actually kind of suck. That's why Cursed Castle EX and Super Hydorah are so great. They have a nostalgic look to them (the CRT effects are good too) but play better and have more depth than the actual games of old.One thing the old games excelled at was pixel art. They did amazing things with limited resolutions and palettes. Most new "retro" games try but fall far short of the quality of the classics. But this game looks fantastic, on the same level as the best arcade and console games of the 80s and 90s.I have to add this is PERFECT for an arcade cabinet install. First, it's native resolution appears to be a 320x180. ArcadeVGA supports 321x200 resolution, so it should run in "exact" mode (pixel perfect) with neglibible letterboxing on a 4:3 display. Second, it supports two players using one keyboard. Which means you can easily configure controls for both players using an I-PAC type USB keyboard encoding device.. The original Hydorah is free. Go play it. It rocks. This game is like that game, except Super. Super as in expanded upon and re-balanced in every way you could probably ever want. Shields are just as available as Turbos and Powers, there's more indication when those and the level-up pieces are about to change, the regular bullets are more visible, your controls are better, etc. There are more levels, more weapons, and many changes made to adapt to this. Additionally, there are some changes made to the old levels and even a few bosses just because they could and should be made. If you like Hydorah but don't own this game, you are cheating yourself. And if the final boss of that version lowers your opinion of the game, then just... don't worry. This version fixes it.*Doesn't count as spoilers because I didn't tell you anything about the actual boss*. Like Gradius? Like Raiden? Like UN Squadron? Buy it.. There's a reason we left Gradius behind. It's a really faithful remake and is beautiful and crisp and etc. But why did you have to remake a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game?. Got this same day as Underworld Ascendant. Guess which one is more fun... Super Hydorah is an extremely well made game, from its visual design to its options, and its controller support (PS4 controllers work with no hassle!). It's clear that developers knew exactly what they wanted to do with this game, and how to make it properly. If you're looking for an extremely polished and optimized shmup then look no further. However, while I understand that this is probably accurate to Gradius (which was the main inspiration for this game), and ultimately a matter of opinion, Super Hydorah is difficult to an extremely excessive degree. The developers seem to be aware of this, and have added a lower difficulty option which lets you survive two hits by default rather than having to find a shield to survive just one. However, using it feels more like i'm just allowed to cheat rather than actually fixing the problem. Buy this game if you want an authentic 2D Shoot-Em-Up experience with a fresh coat of paint, but be warned that this game is immensely punishing and not for everyone.. Almost as if the Gradius creators had made a tribute to their own game and decided to make it better in some ways, as the power up collection system adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay. Perfect music on top of Perfect everything, now with selectable difficulty so anyone can enjoy.. If you love Gradius then your going to want to own this game.Awesome sound track and great replay value, as you can play the game back through on a different route in places. There's not to much to say about this game but go and buy it, as it pays homage to Gradius as I mentioned. And for the price it's a bargain, and to be honest speaking for myself I would of payed £12 for this awsome shoot em up!.😊
